The name Corfu is an italian corruption of Korypho,
a Byzantine name derived from the two peaks on which the citadel
of the chief town hall is built. The ancient name of Corcyra appears
first in Herodotus, who also uses a semitic name - Kerkouros -
meaning a fast Phoenician boat of which probably the greek version
- Kerkyra - derives its name. But today there are many names belongs
to this beautiful island. The greenest of all the greek islands,
Corfu´s
natural beaty is hidden under a cloak of emerald reen, with a mountainous
skyline plunging into the bluest of blue water. That´s why
the name of the Emerald was not given for no reason.
Capital of the island – Kerkyra
Busting, elegant and charming - this improbable port town
is the island´s proud capital. It is called : "Kerkyra" in
greek, as is the island.
Corfu, one of greece´s most beautiful island boasts the
largest capital of all the Ionian Islands with a total population
of around 38000. The town itself is divided into two parts, the
old and the new areas. The old part of the town displays the elegant
churches (the most famuse is called The St. Spyridon – holds
the relics of the Saint himself), the maze of cobbled streets,
and also the Old Fortress that stands proudly, looking over the
town. The new parts of the town hold the abundance of cosmoplitan
shops that can satisfy everyone´s tastes and demands.
The connection with a capital is very easy from everywhere on
the island. There is a Corfu´s bus service - KTEL,
or the "Green Bus Service", which is the National Express
of Greece and serves the island as a whole and runs some direct
routes major cities ond the mainland. In recent years they have
been replacing their fleet with modern air-conditioned vehicles
